Ellen is an Emergency Medicine attending physician and member of the EMS (Emergency Medical Services) faculty at the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC), as well as an Assistant Professor at the Larner College of Medicine.   She works at UVMMC and UVM’s community hospital, Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC) in Berlin, Vermont.

Ellen wandered through a career in business and higher education administration before arriving at her career as an emergency medicine physician. Years of informal involvement in medicine, as an EMT in Southern Vermont, an instructor for SOLO school for wilderness medicine, and a member of volunteer search and rescue squads finally led to a formal medical education.  Ellen obtained her MD degree at Dartmouth and completed her residency at Baystate Medical Center.

Ellen loves the intersection between pre-hospital medicine (wilderness and street) and the emergency department.  She completed a Diploma in Mountain Medicine training program and a fellowship in EMS, both through the University of New Mexico.   She is now thrilled by her position as one of Vermont’s  District Medical Advisors, overseeing many EMS agencies, including the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, which responds to the Three Peaks Medical Facility’s calls.      Ellen is excited to be a part of all stages of patient care, from the slopes to the emergency department.

Ellen also loves being able to bring her pre-hospital care to other countries. She served as a member of the medical team for the Atacama Crossing in Chile as well as a volunteer physician in Manang Nepal on the Annapurna Circuit in 2018.  She is scheduled to volunteer at the Everest ER in the spring of 2022, through the Himalayan Rescue Association.

Ellen lives by the adage “There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”.  As a resident of the Mad River Valley, she can be found outside exploring its endless  trails and dirt roads  on skis, bikes, and foot.
